Homemade Butter
DIY Butter
Prep time: 20 mins
Easy
Ingredients
Whipping cream (1 cup or more)
Instructions
Beat the cream until it reaches and passes the whipped stage, when the butter begins to separate from the liquid (I recommend using a standing mixer or food processor)
Note: it is possible to overbeat the butter (everything will turn to liquid) - but don’t fear! If this happens, just turn down the speed of your mixer and start again
Using your hands, remove the butter from the liquid and gently squeeze out the excess
Save the liquid (buttermilk) - you can use this to make ranch, pancakes, breading, etc.
Place the butter in a bowl of ice water and knead out any remaining buttermilk
Pat dry and add any additional mix-ins or seasonings to make it your own! Some ideas include:
Garlic, chives, parsley, and lemon juice (garlic and herb)
Sundried tomatoes and basil
Sugar and cinnamon
Maple syrup
Green Fact
Did you know food waste has an environmental impact? Greenhouse gas emissions start when the first seed is planted. The further along the supply chain the food loss occurs, the more carbon-intensive the waste. For example, a single tomato spoiled at the harvesting stage will have a lower carbon footprint than tomato sauce wasted at the retail store, since the harvesting, transportation, and processing accumulate additional greenhouse gases along the chain. Therefore, the highest carbon footprint of food wastage occurs during the consumption phase.
Using leftover whipping cream to make butter is a great way to reduce food waste and lower your food footprint!
